Hydrogen storage in microporous metal-organic frameworks.

Metal-organic framework-5 (MOF-5) of composition Zn4O(BDC)3 (BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) with a cubic three-dimensional extended porous structure adsorbed hydrogen up to 4.5 weight percent (17.2 hydrogen molecules per formula unit) at 78 kelvin and 1.0 weight percent at room temperature and pressure of 20 bar. Inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy of the rotational transitions of the ad...

Hydrocarbon Separations in Metal−Organic Frameworks

New materials capable of separating mixtures of saturated, unsaturated, and aromatic hydrocarbons can enable more efficient industrial processes and cleaner energy. Outstanding challenges in hydrocarbon separations stem from the similar structures, properties, and reactivities of the molecules comprising many of these mixtures. With high surface areas, tunable pore geometries, and adjustable su...

Exceptional H2 saturation uptake in microporous metal-organic frameworks.

Saturation H2 uptake in a series of microporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been measured at 77 K. Saturation pressures vary between 25 and 80 bar across the series, with MOF-177 showing the highest uptake on a gravimetric basis (7.5 wt %) and IRMOF-20 showing the highest uptake on a volumetric basis at 34 g/L. These results demonstrate that maximum H2 storage capacity in MOFs correlate...

Azulene based metal-organic frameworks for strong adsorption of H2.

Two Zn MOFs, MOF-645 and MOF-646, comprised of polarized 1,3-azulenedicarboxylate were synthesized. The guest free MOF-646 showed strong MOF-H(2) interactions (7.8-6.8 kJ mol(-1)), which revealed the significant impact of internally polarized azulene backbone to stabilized H(2) molecules in the framework.

Water adsorption in porous metal-organic frameworks and related materials.

Water adsorption in porous materials is important for many applications such as dehumidification, thermal batteries, and delivery of drinking water in remote areas. In this study, we have identified three criteria for achieving high performing porous materials for water adsorption. These criteria deal with condensation pressure of water in the pores, uptake capacity, and recyclability and water...
